RPG Enterprises Chairman Harsh Goenka has dismissed Narayana Murthy’s 70-hour workweek theory, asserting that the traditional five-day workweek is outdated.
RPG Enterprises Chairman Harsh Goenka has shared his perspective on Narayana Murthy’s suggestion of a 70-hour workweek for the youth of India, sparking a discussion on social media.
Narayana Murthy, the co-founder of Infosys, has advocated for an extended workweek in the past as well. In a 2020 interview with ET Now, he proposed that individuals commit to working 10 hours a day, six days a week, for the next 2-3 years, as opposed to the standard 40-hour workweek, in order to accelerate economic growth.
Now, he has requested 70 hours per week. “Our younger generation seems to be adopting less desirable habits from the West and not contributing to our country… I urge our youth to proclaim, ‘This is my homeland, and I’m willing to work 70 hours per week,'” expressed Murthy.

In contrast, Harsh Goenka has completely dismissed this idea. Here are the main points from Goenka’s tweet:
End of the traditional workweek Goenka proclaims that the traditional five-day office week is a thing of the past. He bases this on data showing that people now perform around 33% of their professional responsibilities remotely.
The value of flexibility Goenka notes that remote work and the flexibility it provides are as valuable as an 8% salary increase for many. This underscores the importance that professionals now place on managing their schedules, avoiding daily commutes, and achieving work-life balance.
Hybrid work: The new standard Looking forward, Goenka identifies hybrid work, which combines in-office and remote work, as the prevailing and future model. He emphasizes that the focus should shift from the number of hours worked to individual ambition, purpose, and productivity.
Adopting change Goenka encourages the workforce to adapt to this new professional landscape. He highlights the importance of finding the right balance between office and home-based work, emphasizing the need to prioritize what truly matters in one’s professional life.
The 70-hour workweek Here’s his specific take on Murthy’s 70-hour workweek concept: “It’s no longer about working 50 or 70 hours, but about your personal ambition, your purpose, and your productivity.”
