It’s been over twenty years since a Democrat won the governor’s race in Mississippi. On Tuesday, the state’s voters will determine if this streak continues for another four years. The Republican governor, Tate Reeves, is facing a strong challenge from the Democratic candidate, Brandon Presley. While Presley is the underdog, he’s been gaining momentum.
Brandon Presley, a member of the Mississippi Public Service Commission and a second cousin of Elvis Presley, has been criticizing Governor Reeves over a welfare scandal and making opposition to Medicaid expansion a central issue in the campaign. If neither candidate secures a majority of the popular vote on Tuesday, a runoff will be held on November 28.
Here’s what you need to know about voting:
How to vote: Mississippi has a voter ID law, so make sure to bring valid identification such as a driver’s license, gun license, or passport to the polling place. Voting sites are open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Central time. Although it’s too late to request an absentee ballot, you can still mail one in. Absentee ballots can be postmarked until the close of business on Tuesday, and they must be received by the state by November 18 to be counted. You can track the status of your absentee ballot online.
Where to vote: To find your polling place, enter your home address on the secretary of state’s website.
What’s on the ballot: In addition to the governor’s race, several other statewide contests, including lieutenant governor, attorney general, treasurer, and more, will be decided on Tuesday. State legislative races are also being held.
