Apex Legends Mobile has finally arrived after months of anticipation. This mobile version of the popular battle royale game, developed by Lightspeed & Quantum Studios and Respawn Entertainment, aims to provide a similar experience to the PC and console versions while optimizing it for mobile devices. We’ve given it a try, and here’s what we’ve discovered so far.
Apex Legends Mobile falls into the category of free-to-play online multiplayer games, joining the likes of BGMI, Garena Free Fire Max, New State Mobile, and Call of Duty: Mobile. It faithfully replicates the 2019 PC release of Apex Legends, offering all the game modes you’d expect, including Battle Royale, Team Deathmatch (TDM), and the 3v3 Arena mode, along with a majority of the Legends and weapons.
We tested the game on both Android using a Xiaomi 12 Pro and iOS on an iPhone 13 Pro Max. The early release of the game shows that there is room for improvement, which means you may not experience the smoothest gameplay at this stage.
Apex Legends Mobile offers a refreshing take on the traditional Battle Royale games, which have been a staple for years. The fundamental idea is similar – you engage in a multiplayer match where your squad aims to be the last one standing. To achieve this, you’ll have access to various weapons and unique abilities from Legends (the in-game characters). These Legends consist of Bloodhound, Gibraltar, Lifeline, Wraith, Octane, Bangalore, Caustic, Mirage, Pathfinder, and Fade. While some of the terminology might take some getting used to, the fundamental concept remains unchanged.
Once you join a squad for a Battle Royale match, your responsibility remains the same – stay within the ring, and as it shrinks, the competition gets more intense. During this, you need to watch out for both yourself and your squadmates. Depending on your character’s phone, you can either fight your way to victory or assist your squad in achieving it. You can acquire weapons within buildings or from crates, and if you eliminate an opponent, you can equip yourself with their gear.
Furthermore, Apex Legends Mobile also allows you to select your point of view (POV) – you can opt for a traditional First-Person View or a Third-Person View. The Third-Person View is more comfortable on the eyes but reduces the excitement of the game; it’s the FPP mode that delivers the most thrills.
During combat, it’s simple to switch between different weapon loadouts and even holster them to sprint faster. Spot an enemy, aim, and shoot – a successful hit earns you points. If you get eliminated in the BR mode, you’ll have to wait for your squadmate to revive you, provided they collect your tag and reach the nearest respawn point. When logging in for the first time, a tutorial is available to explain all the game mechanics.
Health in this game is safeguarded by a protective shield that requires strengthening after being damaged by enemies. When your shield is depleted, your best option is to retreat for safety. You have the option to utilize medical kits to restore your health or recharge your health shield. Certain characters, known as Legends, possess the ability to summon care packages that provide them with additional protective resources.
The gameplay is straightforward and realistic, featuring various familiar moves from Apex Legends. You have access to a wide range of weaponry, ranging from sniper rifles to laser guns. Unlike some other battle royale games, you are limited to traveling on foot and cannot use vehicles to navigate the maps.
Additionally, there are two game modes, Team Deathmatch (TDM) and 3v3, but they are initially locked and can be unlocked as you progress to a certain level. To improve your skills and become more accustomed to the game, there is a Free Practice mode available.
When you’re not actively engaged in the game, you have the option to acquire various custom skins and weapons to enhance your experience. Additionally, there’s a Battle Pass that players can purchase to unlock extra rewards.
In terms of graphics quality, Apex Legends Mobile isn’t quite on par with console quality. However, it matches up with the visual quality of Call of Duty: Mobile, which is considered one of the best-looking mobile multiplayer games. When played on high-end smartphones like the iPhone 13 Pro Max and the Xiaomi 12 Pro, the game offers impressive visuals, especially with its vibrant environments and stunning special effects.
New players will be captivated by the abundant use of lasers, neon lights, and other visually appealing elements. The game is also optimized to run smoothly on older phones, allowing you to adjust the graphics and frame rates for better performance.
Apex Legends Mobile arrives at a time when the mobile multiplayer gaming market is saturated with similar options, as everyone aims to replicate the success of PUBG Mobile. With its fresh gameplay concepts and intriguing characters to play, Apex Legends Mobile stands out as a breath of fresh air. It’s more than just a straightforward PC port, as every aspect has been designed with mobile gamers in mind.
While Battle Royale enthusiasts will find the gameplay style familiar, the presentation and execution of Apex Legends Mobile are enjoyable, particularly for those who may have grown tired of traditional Battle Royale games. Whether it will become a major force in the mobile gaming market remains to be seen, and only time will reveal its impact.
