A BMC representative mentioned that initially, the municipal body considered acquiring milk packets. “It took us four months before opting for tetra packs, as they are convenient for storage and can be utilized based on daily needs.”
Mumbai: Twelve months following Aarey Dairy’s cessation of milk delivery to civic-run medical facilities, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to distribute tetra milk packs to all its hospitalized patients. This enables direct serving to the patient, eliminating the practice of serving milk loosely in a glass.
On August 29, Aarey Dairy informed the BMC that it couldn’t supply milk to the civic body. Consequently, hospitals independently obtained milk for pediatric patients, pregnant women, and those requiring nutrition through a nasogastric tube.
“We’ve opted for tetra milk packs for convenience, eliminating the need for loose milk service. We’ll procure 100ml, 200ml, 500ml, and 1-liter tetra packets, with 100ml directly served to patients,” said Vijay Balamwar, joint commissioner of the central purchasing department (CPD).
An official from the BMC mentioned that initially, the civic body considered procuring milk packets. “It took us four months before deciding on tetra packs, as they are easy to store and can be used as needed for the day. Unlike milk packets, which needed to be consumed on the same day after boiling, tetra packs will reduce potential wastage,” Balamwar explained.

This marks the first instance of the CPD overseeing the tendering process for milk purchases across all civic hospitals. To adapt to the transition to tetra packs, the BMC has expanded its budget from ₹14 crore to ₹42 crore. The procurement will now include tetra packs of 100 ml and 200 ml.
The city’s major hospitals, such as KEM, LTMG Sion, Dr RN Cooper, and BYL Nair, along with 16 peripheral hospitals and 30 maternity homes, collectively consume an average of 4,000 liters of milk daily. The four major hospitals alone require 700 liters daily, and Aarey Dairy previously supplied this milk at a subsidized cost of ₹39 per liter.
A doctor from a civic-run hospital mentioned that milk is a crucial component of patients’ meals. “Previously, most hospitals prioritized serving milk to patients rather than providing it to everyone. They sourced it from local vendors. It’s positive that the corporation will now supply milk to all patients,” the doctor stated.
