Francis has expressed that, like Pope Benedict XVI did in 2013, if he were to retire, he would prefer residing in a location outside the Vatican within Rome.
Pope Francis has expressed his desire to be buried in the Rome basilica of St. Mary Major instead of the Vatican grottoes, where other popes are traditionally interred. The reason behind his choice is his wish to be close to his favorite icon of the Madonna.
Despite turning 87 soon and facing recent health issues, including acute bronchitis that led to the cancellation of a trip to Dubai, Pope Francis stated in his first interview since the incident that he never considered resigning this year.

He mentioned confirmed plans for a trip to Belgium next year and potential visits to Polynesia and Argentina, acknowledging that travel plans are being reconsidered based on proximity due to health considerations.
Reflecting on the possibility of resignation, Pope Francis reiterated that while the papal position is for life, he remains open to the idea of stepping down when deemed necessary. He expressed his reliance on divine guidance for the timing of any such decision.
In the event of retirement, Pope Francis affirmed his preference to live outside the Vatican, in a residence for retired priests in Rome. His strong connection to the city is underscored by his devotion to an icon of the Virgin Mary in the St. Mary Major basilica, near Rome’s main train station. After each journey, he visits the basilica to pray before the Salus populi Romani, a Byzantine-style painting depicting Mary holding the infant Jesus and a golden book. Pope Francis has already decided to be buried in the basilica, emphasizing the spiritual significance of the place to him.
