Shami emerged as the top wicket-taker in the 2023 ODI World Cup, claiming 24 wickets, which comprised three instances of taking five wickets in a single match. India concluded the tournament as the second-place team.
President Droupadi Murmu awards the Arjuna Award to Mohammad Shami for his cricket achievements at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on Tuesday.
On Tuesday, India’s standout athletes received the national sports awards from President Droupadi Murmu in an elaborate ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan.
Normally held on August 29 to honor the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, the event was rescheduled due to the Asian Games in China, occurring between September 23 and October 8, 2023.
The Arjuna Award list included 26 athletes and para-athletes. Esha Singh, a 19-year-old who secured her spot for the Paris Olympics, couldn’t attend the ceremony as she was competing in the Asian Olympic Qualifiers in Jakarta.
Among the 25 awardees present at the Durbar Hall was Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami, who played a crucial role in India’s success in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Initially on the bench for the first four games, Shami emerged as the leading wicket-taker with 24 scalps, including three five-wicket hauls, the most in a single 50-over ICC event.
Despite recovering from an ankle injury sustained during the World Cup, Shami received the prestigious Arjuna Award, becoming the 58th Indian cricketer, joining legendary names like Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami, and Virat Kohli.

Dronacharya Awards in the regular category were conferred upon Lalit Kumar (wrestling), RB Ramesh (chess), Mahaveer Prasad Saini (para athletics), Shivendra Singh (hockey), and Ganesh Prabhakar Devrukhkar (mallakhamb) for their exceptional coaching skills.
In the lifetime category, Jaskirat Singh Grewal (golf), Bhaskaran E (kabaddi), and Jayanta Kumar Pushilal (table tennis) were honored with the Dronacharya Award for their enduring contributions as coaches.
The Dhyan Chand Award for lifetime achievement was bestowed upon Manjusha Kanwar (badminton), Vineet Kumar Sharma (hockey), and Kavitha Selvaraj (kabaddi) in recognition of their remarkable sporting careers.
The Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy for 2023 was clinched by Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, as the overall winner university. Lovely Professional University, Punjab, secured the first runner-up position, while Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra, earned the second runner-up spot.
