Similar to Yash Chopra’s 2004 groundbreaking cross-border love story, Dunki features Shah Rukh Khan and Taapsee Pannu as lovers separated by borders, yet unbound by them.
Shah Rukh Khan and Taapsee Pannu star in Dunki, a tale of love transcending borders. In a plot reminiscent of Veer-Zaara, the story unfolds with two young individuals falling in love in India, where the man becomes the woman’s savior.
He pledges to protect her at any cost, making her challenging journey home his own mission. However, when he relocates to a new country, he faces a dilemma: choosing between his love for her and his love for his homeland.

Despite these parallels, the narratives begin to diverge. The man makes a different choice, leading to varied reactions from both characters. They continue their separate journeys in their chosen countries, maintaining a lasting affection for each other over two decades, even though they lose contact and assume each has settled with their respective spouses. Their paths eventually cross again, prompting them to return to their homeland. There, they discover they have remained single, patiently waiting for each other all these years.
Choices can define our destinies, a theme mirrored in the films “Veer-Zaara” and “Dunki.” In “Veer-Zaara,” faced with compromising love or loyalty to his country, Veer chooses love, enduring imprisonment. On the contrary, Hardy in “Dunki” prioritizes patriotism over love, resulting in separation from Mannu.
Zaara, learning of Veer’s demise, breaks her engagement and dedicates herself to Veer’s village. Despite veering from the path of marriage, she fulfills the duties as his hypothetical widow. Conversely, Mannu in “Dunki” knowingly opts for asylum, choosing her British dreams over returning to India. Later, her desire to see her homeland prevails, highlighting a departure from Hardy’s choice.
Both tales depict star-crossed lovers hindered by factors like nationality and immigration laws. Yet, Veer and Zaara stand united against adversities, returning to India as a married couple. In contrast, Mannu’s death after Hardy’s proposal raises questions. Is this a punitive measure for not choosing love earlier? The disparity in outcomes for Hardy, who prioritized patriotism, challenges the film’s theme of transcending borders for love and humanity. Sacrificing love for one’s country may seem outdated; perhaps embracing another country for love could be a novel approach.
