In a special interview with Hindustan Times, Shruti shared insights about her experience working in Salaar and her aspirations for the upcoming year.
Shruti Haasan has shared insights into her decision to accept the role in Salaar, as told to Akshay Amberkar.
Shruti Haasan plays the role of Aadya in Prashanth Neel’s Salaar Part 1: Ceasefire. Growing up in the US, far from the violent world of Khansaar, her father’s domain, Aadya serves as a connection for the audience.
As she delves into Deva’s (Prabhas) gruesome past, both she and the audience are increasingly shocked. Shruti, in an exclusive interview with Hindustan Times, expresses her intrigue about the role, emphasizing Aadya’s status as a misfit in the violent environment and the unfolding of events through her perspective.
In a candid conversation, Shruti talks about her experience working in Salaar and shares her feelings when SS Rajamouli expressed his hope for a dance number in the film. She explains that Prabhas is an “interesting” co-star, revealing that her decision to join Salaar was partly driven by the opportunity to work with him. While she anticipated Prabhas’s acting prowess, she was surprised by his ability to seamlessly switch between his intense on-screen character and his laidback off-screen demeanor. She describes him as chill, friendly, and relaxed when not in character, highlighting his kindness, thoughtfulness, and generosity, which exceed people’s expectations. However, once the director calls “action,” a completely different Prabhas emerges.
The sole interview Prabhas granted in person prior to the release of Salaar was with Baahubali director SS Rajamouli, where Prashanth and Prithviraj Sukumaran also participated. During the conversation, Rajamouli expressed disappointment over Shruti not having a dance number in the film. He mentioned his admiration for her dancing skills in songs from Race Gurram and Srimanthudu, saying, “I just learned there are no duets in the film. Prashanth, you disappointed me.”
Shruti acknowledges feeling “flattered” by Rajamouli’s appreciation for her dance, but she emphasizes that dance is no longer a priority for her in selecting film projects. She expresses happiness at Rajamouli liking her dancing, stating, “But when I signed this project, I knew the story was the focus here. It’s the story that made me want to be part of Prashanth’s world.”
Shruti kicked off the year with lead roles in two Telugu films, Veera Simha Reddy and Waltair Veerayya, both released on the same day in January. In Veera Simha Reddy, she portrayed a tone-deaf aspiring singer, while in Waltair Veerayya, she took on the role of a RAW agent. Reflecting on the year, she expressed that starting and ending the year with film releases, alongside working with Balakrishna, Chiranjeevi, and Prabhas, was a highlight. Additionally, she released a special single titled “Monster Machine,” a song celebrating self-love.
Shruti is set to appear in an English project titled “The Eye,” directed by Daphne Schmon, with Mark Rowley as her co-star. The psychological thriller has been showcased at the London International Film Festival and the Greek International Film Festival, with a theatrical release on the horizon.
In addition, she is part of a Telugu-Hindi bilingual project called “Dacoit,” directed by Shaneil Deo and co-starring Adivi Sesh. Although she remains tight-lipped about the details, Shruti expressed happiness that the teaser was well-received. She looks forward to reuniting with the team on the sets of “Dacoit” and hopes that 2024 will bring similar success as 2023.
