The yearly gathering in Los Angeles, formerly a crucial platform for video game companies to display their innovations, faced challenges in maintaining significance within a transforming industry.
The 24th Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in 2018 featured the PlayStation booth in Los Angeles.
E3, one of the world’s biggest video game conventions, is permanently closing down, as its organizers, the nonprofit Entertainment Software Association, declared on Tuesday. This marks the end of a yearly tradition for gamers and creators, as E3 struggled to stay relevant in an ever-changing industry.

The Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3, had been hosted in Los Angeles since 1995, except for the pandemic-induced cancellation. Initially intended for journalists and industry professionals, it eventually opened up to fans, attracting significant crowds. In 2007, it became an invite-only event, still drawing up to 50,000 industry members each June.
Over time, E3 faced competition from fan-oriented conventions like Comic-Con, the Penny Arcade Expo, and MineCon, while losing key partners such as Nintendo and Sony. The convention also contended with the industry shift towards digital distribution and the rise of mobile games.
The pandemic dealt a blow to E3, leading to cancellations in 2020 and a virtual format in 2021. The event was canceled again in 2022 and did not recover. The Entertainment Software Association, after confirming E3’s end, emphasized its commitment to advocating for member companies and the industry workforce on social media.
