A tragic incident occurred during a hot air balloon ride over Melbourne on Monday. One of the passengers fell from the basket after only 30 minutes in the air. While the balloon landed safely later, the man’s body was discovered in a nearby residential area. Those aboard, including the pilot, were understandably shaken and are receiving counseling, as reported by Sky News.
Authorities spoke with other occupants of the balloon and witnesses to understand the circumstances surrounding the death. Police confirmed that there was no foul play involved in the passenger’s demise. The morning flight of the balloon originated from a northern suburb of Melbourne, Australia’s second-largest city.
Representatives from the National Commercial Hot Air Ballooning Industry and the Australian Ballooning Federation extended their condolences to the victim’s loved ones. In a joint statement, they emphasized that hot air balloon baskets are designed with safety in mind to prevent accidental falls or exits.
Acknowledging the trauma experienced by passengers and the pilot, the operator is arranging psychological support and counseling for all affected parties.
A spokesperson for Victoria Police informed Sky News, “Police will prepare a report for the coroner following the death of a man in [the suburb of] Preston on Monday, March 18th.”
