Taijul took 4 wickets for 109 runs initially and followed it up with another impressive performance, claiming 6 wickets for 75 runs in the second innings to conclude New Zealand’s innings at 181 during the first session of the final day.
Bangladeshi cricketers Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan Miraz celebrate after dismissing New Zealand’s Tom Blundell on the fourth day of the initial test cricket match in Sylhet (AP).
Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam clinched his second 10-wicket haul in tests as Bangladesh sealed a 150-run win in the series-opening match against New Zealand on Saturday.
Taijul followed up his 4-109 with a 6-75 in the second innings, concluding New Zealand’s innings at 181 in the first session of the final day as they pursued a target of 332 runs.
Offspinner Nayeem Hasan supported him with 2-40, while pacer Shoriful Islam (1-13) and offspinner Mehidy Hasan (1-44) each chipped in with a wicket.
Daryl Mitchell, with a patient 58 from 120 balls, struggled to lead the visitors in scoring.
Starting at 113-7, Mitchell’s presence provided a slim hope for New Zealand in an improbable victory attempt. He managed to hit Taijul for a boundary in the third ball of the day and followed it up with a single through cover off the same bowler to reach his ninth half-century in 99 balls.
Unlike many of his compatriots, Mitchell appeared confident against the host’s spinners. However, a mistimed sweep shot against offspinner Nayeem Hasan led to his dismissal, effectively putting an end to New Zealand’s chances of salvaging the game.
Captain Tim Southee scored an aggressive 34 off 24 deliveries, including one four and two sixes, before Taijul dismissed him to complete his 12th five-wicket haul.
Taijul then sealed the match when Ish Sodhi, who scored a slow 22 off 91 balls, offered a straightforward catch to Zakir Hasan at silly mid-off.
Opening batsman Mahmudul Hasan contributed 86 as Bangladesh was dismissed for 310 in their first innings. New Zealand, led by a remarkable 104 from Kane Williamson, compiled 317, taking a seven-run lead.
Najmul Hossain Shanto became the first Bangladeshi cricketer to achieve a century on debut as captain. The hosts posted 338 in the second innings, setting a challenging target of 332 runs for the Black Caps on a pitch that was increasingly deteriorating.
Taijul later used his spin prowess to dismantle the visitors’ batting order towards the end of day four and the subsequent morning, guiding Bangladesh to its inaugural home triumph over New Zealand, marking only its second victory against them.
The upcoming and last match of the series is scheduled to commence on December 6 at Mirpur.
