Job scams are on the rise in India, and there was a recent incident in Chandigarh where a man lost over ₹6 lakh after falling victim to a fake job offer found on various job portals.
As reported by HT, the victim, Navin Gupta, had uploaded his CV on several job search websites. According to the police, on June 22, he received a phone call from someone claiming to be associated with a national media organization, offering him a job. The caller also asked for ₹6,500 as a fee to arrange an interview.
Trusting the legitimacy of the call, Navin transferred the money. Afterward, he was pressured to make more payments for various reasons, including mandatory courses, document verification, medical examinations, and IT training. Eventually, he received a fake appointment letter. Having paid over ₹6.4 lakh, he sought help from the authorities, and a case related to this incident has been officially filed at the cybercrime police station.

Here are some important tips to remember to protect yourself from such scams:
- Use reputable job portals: Apply for jobs only through well-known job platforms like LinkedIn, Naukri.com, Indeed, and others.
- Verify job offers: If you’re exploring job opportunities from other sources, do thorough research on the person offering the job to confirm their legitimacy. Ask for their name and the company they claim to represent. A simple Google search can help verify the company’s existence.
- Safeguard your personal information: Be cautious when sharing personal information, including your name and phone number. Share such details only on reliable and established websites.
- Avoid sending money: Never send money to an unfamiliar bank account, and don’t share your banking credentials with anyone. Legitimate companies do not ask for payment in exchange for job opportunities.
