In 2024, under the leadership of Elon Musk, SpaceX introduced a new project by launching an initial set of Starlink internet satellites via the Falcon 9 spacecraft on January 2nd at 10:44 p.m. EST.
The satellites are designed to provide direct-to-cell capabilities, allowing access to satellite broadband directly on smartphones.
This innovation aims to overcome challenges related to geographical features that typically impede the provision of internet services.
The launch took place at Space Launch Complex 4 East (SLC-4E) at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, deploying a total of 21 Starlink satellites into low-Earth orbit. Notably, the mission included the deployment of the first six Starlink satellites equipped with Direct-to-Cell capabilities.
According to the official Starlink website, “This launch features the initial six Starlink satellites with Direct to Cell capabilities. These capabilities will empower mobile network operators worldwide to offer seamless global access to texting, calling, and browsing, regardless of your location on land, lakes, or coastal waters.”
In practical terms, individuals using Starlink on their smartphones will experience mobile phone connectivity regardless of their location.
If your telecom provider has gained access to Starlink, it will work with your current mobile phone. This is particularly important in areas where internet connectivity is limited or nonexistent.
Additionally, the system can be quickly set up, proving useful in emergencies when ground infrastructure may be unavailable due to various reasons, such as disasters. Importantly, it can provide essential access to resources in such situations.
As part of the launch, the first stage of the Falcon 9 returned to Earth just 8.5 minutes after takeoff, successfully landing on the ‘Of Course I Still Love You’ droneship in the Pacific Ocean. Starlink aims to establish a satellite internet network covering the entire Earth. Currently, more than 5100 active satellites have been launched, and the number continues to grow with each subsequent launch.
