The police stated that the teenager died during a bus dispute, which might have had connections to a gang.
A 13-year-old boy lost his life after being stabbed on a city bus in Staten Island on Friday afternoon, allegedly by another teenager, as reported by the police.
The suspected assailant, a 14-year-old boy, fled the bus but was apprehended by a retired police sergeant who was in the vicinity, according to the authorities.
The incident occurred near Littlefield Avenue on Hylan Boulevard, a major road in the borough. While the police are still investigating, they indicated during a Friday night news conference that they believe the incident had ties to gang activity.
John M. Chell, the Chief of Patrol for the Police Department, expressed his sorrow, calling it a “tragic, tragic homicide.”
Around 2:30 p.m. on Friday, an altercation erupted on the bus, during which a knife was brandished, and gang-related gestures were exchanged, Chief Chell explained. The 13-year-old victim was stabbed in the chest and later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.
The 14-year-old suspect fled the bus, running approximately three blocks. Fortunately, a retired Police Department sergeant who happened to be nearby pursued him and detained him after a bystander reported the stabbing. Chief Chell referred to this bystander as a “good Samaritan.”
On Friday evening, the scene on Hylan Boulevard, where the stabbing occurred, was cordoned off with yellow police tape. A city bus was parked at the roadside, its red lights flashing until they abruptly turned off.
