Recent research indicates that more and more Americans are using prescription Drugs and are prolonging their usage for extended periods.
In the early stages of life, most individuals primarily focus on education, and a significant part of their time is then dedicated to married life. However, recent research suggests that for an American born in 2019, a larger portion of their life will be devoted to taking prescribed medications compared to the time spent on both education and marriage.
According to recent research by Jessica Ho,Drugs an associate professor of sociology and demography at Penn State, American males are projected to spend about 48% of their lifetimes taking prescription drugs. For females, this percentage increases to 60% .
These findings were shared by Ms. Ho in the Demography journal during the week of October 1.

“As an American, I would like to understand the medications I am putting into my body and for how long I might need them,” said Ms. Ho.
“The years that individuals can anticipate spending on prescription medications now surpass the time they might spend in their initial marriage, pursuing education, or being part of the workforce. It’s crucial to acknowledge the significant role that prescription drug usage now plays in our lives.”
The research relies on data from 1996 to 2019, obtained through a consistent annual national survey on drug usage in the United States. Each year, about 15,000 households are selected, and data is collected every five months. This method enhances the accuracy of data recall compared to yearly surveys.
According to a university news release, the study revealed that most American men start taking prescription drugs by age 40, while the majority of American women begin at age 15. On average, a boy born in 2019 could expect to use prescription drugs for roughly 37 years, or about 48% of his life. A girl born in 2019 could expect to use them for approximately 47.5 years, or about 60% of her life.
“We observe that females initiate the use of prescription medications at an earlier stage than males, and part of this can be attributed to the use of birth control and hormonal contraceptives,” stated Ms. Ho.
“It’s also linked to more women using medications for therapy and pain relief. If we look at the contrast between men and women, leaving out birth control accounts for only about one-third of the gap. The other two-thirds mainly come from the use of hormone-related drugs, pain relievers, and medications for mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, and ADHD.”
