The collision involved the Visakhapatnam-Palasa passenger train and the Visakhapatnam-Ragada passenger train, leading to a derailment between the towns of Alamanda and Kantakapalle in Andhra Pradesh. Authorities have stated that the accident occurred because one of the passenger trains failed to adhere to a signal.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declared an ex-gratia relief of ₹2 lakh from the PM’s National Relief Fund for the families of each deceased individual and ₹50,000 for those injured in the Andhra Pradesh train accident.
