The New Republic attributes Musk’s actions to an “insatiable desire to be the center of attention” and characterizes him as seizing the spotlight from the impeached former President Donald Trump.
Throughout the past year, Elon Musk has faced various controversies, overshadowing the achievements of his space exploration company, SpaceX. The New Republic points out that Musk’s notoriety stems from his perceived incompetence and his role in endorsing controversial figures on Twitter, including Alex Jones and Donald Trump.
Among Musk’s notable controversies are Tesla’s self-driving feature recall and criticism of the impracticality of the Cybertruck, which he claimed to be bulletproof. SpaceX also encountered setbacks with failed missions and environmental disasters.
Regarding Musk’s acquisition of Twitter and its subsequent transformation into ‘X,’ The New Republic criticizes his free speech agenda, attributing the platform’s downfall to a proliferation of misinformation and propaganda. The verified user system changes, an influx of bigots and trolls, along with Musk’s own presence, have diminished Twitter’s utility. The platform, once a vital breaking news service, is now described as a mere shadow of its former self, experiencing a decline in relevance and the departure of advertisers.
Elon Musk’s managerial decisions also affected Twitter’s internal dynamics, with massive layoffs reducing the workforce by half. Musk’s perceived toxic leadership style contributed to the decline of both the platform’s backend and frontend.
Furthermore, Elon Musk faced a meltdown at The New York Times’ DealBook conference, responding to advertiser defections following his endorsement of an antisemitic conspiracy theory with a pre-planned and immature outburst.
