Guru Nanak Jayanti, or Gurpurab, commemorates the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, the first guru and the founder of the Sikh religion.
The revered festival is marked by devoted celebrations, spiritual congregations, and the recitation of hymns from the Guru Granth Sahib, the sacred scripture of the Sikh faith.
This year, Guru Nanak Jayanti falls on Monday, November 27, and Sikhs worldwide observe the occasion with profound love and respect.
Annually, the festival aligns with the full moon date of Kartik month, also known as Kartik Purnima. Additionally, the day includes the observance of Parkash Utsav.
Guru Nanak Dev, born in 1469 in the village of Rai Bhoi di Talwandi (now Nankana Sahib near Lahore, Pakistan), authored numerous hymns, compiled by Guru Arjan Dev in the Adi Granth.

On Guru Nanak Jayanti, Sikh followers observe the Akhand Path by reciting the Sikh holy scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib.
Two days before the festival, early morning processions called Prabhat Pheris are organized, where devotees sing hymns and journey through localities.

On the eve of Guru Nanak Dev’s birth date, devotees also participate in Nagar Kirtan. The parade is led by the Panj Pyare, a group of five men carrying the Sikh triangular flag, Nishan Sahib.
On Gurpurab, prayers take place in Gurdwaras throughout the day. The various elements of the festival continue until late at night, concluding with devotees partaking in the langar.
Langar food is considered auspicious, and the traditional prasad served on special occasions is kada prasad.
