A motion of no confidence is proposed in the House of Commons against the Justin Trudeau government. If the motion succeeds, elections would be held within 45 days. Trudeau currently heads a minority government, and scheduled elections are not until October 2025.
A petition urging the House of Commons to initiate a vote of no confidence against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government has gathered the highest number of signatures in recent years.
The petition, e-4701, was launched by Melissa Outwater, a resident of Peterborough, Ontario, on November 24. By Wednesday evening, it had garnered over 300,000 signatures, the highest number for any petition since Trudeau assumed office in 2015.
Michelle Ferreri, an MP from the Conservative Party, sponsors the petition.
The petition declares, “As Canadian citizens, we have lost trust in Justin Trudeau and the Liberal/NDP coalition.” The reference is made to the informal understanding between the ruling Liberal Party and the New Democratic Party, even though it is not a formal coalition.
The petition calls for a vote of no confidence in the Trudeau government in the House of Commons. If successful, it proposes holding elections within 45 days. Despite Trudeau leading a minority government, elections are not scheduled until October 2025.

“The current government in power is not acting in the best interests of all citizens, as outlined in a petition highlighting various crises such as housing costs, high inflation, and unbalanced immigration policies. The petition expresses a lack of confidence in the Prime Minister based on the past eight years, citing five ethics investigations and damage to Canada’s global reputation under his leadership.
Trudeau is facing challenges as his party trails the Conservatives by over 10% in recent opinion polls, putting the opposition party in a comfortable majority position. The petition echoes public sentiment in Canada, as indicated by recent surveys. A November 29 poll by Ipsos for Global News revealed that nearly three in four respondents wanted Trudeau to resign, including a third of Liberal Party supporters.”
