Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for the first time, addressed accusations of an Indian assassination plot in the US, stating that he will examine any evidence. However, he emphasized that a “few incidents” would not hinder the relationship between the US and India.

In a recent interview with the Financial Times, Prime Minister Modi stated, “If someone provides us with any information, we will certainly investigate it. If a citizen of ours has engaged in any actions, positive or negative, we are prepared to scrutinize it. Our commitment is to uphold the rule of law.”
The United States recently accused India of being involved in a plot to assassinate its citizen and the general counsel for the separatist group Sikhs for Justice, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, whom India has labeled a terrorist.
Expressing deep concern over the activities of certain extremist groups based overseas, Modi told the financial daily, “These elements, under the guise of freedom of expression, have engaged in intimidation and incited violence.”
In reference to the accusations, Modi stated, “There is strong bipartisan support for strengthening this relationship, which is a clear indicator of a mature and stable partnership. Security and counter-terrorism cooperation have been key components of our partnership. I don’t think it is appropriate to link a few incidents with diplomatic relations between the two countries.”
“We need to accept the fact that we are living in the era of multilateralism,” Modi said. “The world is interconnected as well as interdependent. This reality compels us to recognize that absolute agreement on all matters cannot be a prerequisite for collaboration.”
Regarding the alleged assassination plot, last month, the US Department of Justice unsealed an indictment that implicated a serving Indian government official for orchestrating the plot to assassinate Pannun in June this year. They claimed that a hitman hired by Gupta, who turned out to be an undercover agent for US law enforcement, was involved. In response, India acknowledged receiving inputs from the US and announced the formation of a high-level investigation committee to examine the issue.
Despite the controversy surrounding the alleged political assassination plot, both India and the US maintain a strong alliance as natural allies and strategic partners. After the plot was uncovered in June, US President Joe Biden visited India for the G20, and a 2+2 dialogue was held in New Delhi last month.
