A significant security breach occurred in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday afternoon, coinciding with the 22nd anniversary of the 2001 Parliament terror attack.
During that attack, nine individuals, including eight security personnel, lost their lives, leading to shock across India. The assault was executed by two prohibited Pakistan-based terror groups, Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, resulting in the elimination of five terrorists. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla paid tributes to the victims just hours before the recent incident.
The PM expressed, “Their courage and sacrifice in the face of danger will forever be etched in our memory,” while President Droupadi Murmu highlighted that the terrorists’ sinister plan to eliminate political leadership and harm the Temple of Democracy was thwarted 22 years ago on this day.

“Their courage and sacrifice in the face of danger will forever be etched in our memory,” said the PM on X, while President Droupadi Murmu expressed, “On this day 22 years ago, the nefarious plan of terrorists to eliminate the top line of political leadership… and damage our Temple of Democracy was foiled.”
The security breach also follows a threat by Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, who had warned of an attack on this day. Delhi Police heightened their alert status after his vow to “shake the very foundation of Parliament.”
At 1:02 pm, a disturbance occurred in the Lok Sabha when an individual leaped from the visitors’ gallery and entered the chamber. Another person remained in the gallery, releasing canisters emitting yellow smoke. In an online video, the individual inside the chamber maneuvered around desks in an attempt to escape capture.
However, Members of Parliament eventually cornered him. Concerned about their safety, lawmakers have raised questions about the breach, noting the potential toxicity of the smoke.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has assured a comprehensive investigation will be conducted.
