Thailand and China are set to mutually eliminate visa requirements for their citizens starting in March, as announced by Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin on Tuesday.
As Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy heavily dependent on tourism, Thailand had previously waived entry requirements for Chinese tourists until February this year.
Prime Minister Srettha emphasized that this move would enhance the relationship between the two nations.
Government data for 2023 revealed that Thailand welcomed 28 million foreign tourists, slightly surpassing its target and generating 1.2 trillion baht ($34.93 billion) in revenue.
Malaysia was the leading source market with 4.5 million visitors, followed by China with 3.5 million arrivals. In comparison, the pre-COVID record showed 39 million arrivals, including 11 million from China.
