“Wynonna Judd, are you alright tonight? What was that all about?” “Why is Wynonna Judd gripping Jelly Roll so tightly?”
Fans of the American country singer Wynonna Judd have been asking numerous questions following her ‘worrisome’ performance at the CMA Awards 2023.
The singer has now addressed her performance in a TikTok video. “Don’t bother with the comments; I did read them!” she started in the clip posted on Wednesday, November 8.
“I’ll be honest with you all. I was extremely nervous. Once I got out there and saw Jelly Roll, I really wanted it to be a great performance for him,” she continued. “I could almost cry right now, but I won’t because I’m such a big fan of his, and when he asked me to sing, I said, ‘Absolutely!’ But when I got out there, nerves got the best of me, and I just held on for dear life. That’s the bottom line.”
The 59-year-old singer surprised the audience by joining Jelly Roll in singing his song “Need Favour.” However, fans expressed concern about her health as she held onto the 38-year-old singer’s arm during the performance. Wynonna, in an unannounced collaboration, admitted feeling nervous about the impromptu performance.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, she explained her motivation: “I have to show up for people like people did for me. That’s my job now—to pass it on because people have been so generous with me. Now it’s my turn to be generous with people like Jelly Roll, and that’s what I’m doing.”
At the awards’ close, Jelly Roll and K.Michelle paid tribute to the Judds, with a performance of “Love Can Build a Bridge,” honoring Wynonna and her late mother Naomi, a talented singer who passed away in 2022.
“The initial statement I made was, ‘I won’t proceed with this without Wynonna’s approval.’ Prior to engaging in the song or recording, I reached out to Wynonna,” Jelly Roll expressed regarding his tribute.
“I hold a great deal of admiration for Wynonna; my upbringing involved listening to The Judds. Wynonna is someone I deeply love. She responded by saying, ‘Not only do I approve, but I encourage you to make it grand!'”
